Lesser-Visited African Destinations For Your Bucket List

Explore and Connect off the beaten path

So you’ve hiked to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, checked into a quaint riad in Marrakech, or maybe dreamt about visiting the untouched lands of Seychelles, but there are myriad lesser-visited destinations, worthy of visiting on the continent of Africa. This week, we’re highlighting just a few to add to your travel bucket list. Africa is filled with dramatic landscapes, remarkable wildlife, iconic adventures, and all of these places will check your wanderlust boxes without being surrounded by thousands of tourists. Kayak through Gisenyi’s sparkling clear waters or traverse through rainforests in Gishwati-Mukura National Park while admiring chimpanzees and monkeys. With over 50 countries, we know it can be daunting deciding where to visit when planning a trip to Africa, and if you’re traveling far, you may want to visit more than one. Love whales? Us too. 🐋 It’s whale watching season in most of the Northern Hemisphere—here’s where to go for your best chance of spotting the gentle giants.👇🏽

Los Cabos, Mexico: It’s possible to spot whales year-round in the Sea of Cortés, but go December-April to spot grey whales, blue whales, humpback, and sperm whales.

Vancouver Island, Canada: Go May-October to spot orcas and grey whales

French Polynesia: Go July-November to spot humpback whales and their calves.

Azores, Portugal: Go April-June for the best chance to see sperm whales, humpbacks, sei whales, and more.

Dominican Republic: Sperm and humpback whales are visible throughout the year, but go January-March for your best chance of spotting them.

Iceland: Head to northern Iceland in May-September to see humpback, blue, minke, and sperm whales.

Would you go on a quietcation? One of this year’s biggest travel trends has us seeking out silence—like the kind you’ll find if you’re in Bali on March 19th for Nyepi. For 24 hours, the island goes quiet in celebration of the Hindu New Year, giving residents and guests space to cleanse negative energy, reflect, and welcome in new beginnings.
