Nihi Sumba, Indonesia - Full-Time Travel

Nihi Sumba

Sumba Island, Indonesia
In a Nutshell:

A private island paradise in Indonesia. The founder of Nihi discovered the island of Sumba while in search of a secluded surf spot with world-class waves. The resort he ended up building here is luxurious while retaining a rustic, at-one-with-nature feel. Nihi Sumba’s 28 villas are more like openair tree-top mansions, complete with a private butler ready to organize massages, yoga classes, water activities and anything else you could possibly desire.

EDITOR'S TIP: Don’t miss the decadent beachfront Omakase experience. Watch the sushi chefs prepare an assortment of catch-of-the-day dishes for a maximum of eight diners, next to a crackling beach bonfire.

Why We Love It:
  • An opportunity to be at one with nature while staying in the most opulent accommodations imaginable. Everything is designed to be open to nature (even the bathrooms) with views of the ocean. Sounds of the jungle are like an instant natural sedative.
  • During your stay, you are treated like royalty, and in turn, your presence contributes to Nihi’s philanthropic work. The Sumba Foundation partners with local villages to provide essentials like access to clean water, education programs, and malaria prevention solutions.
  • Although the resort is high-end, the goal is for you to feel comfortable at all times. Flip flops and shorts are allowed (and encouraged) in every area of the property.
  • Saluting the sun from Nihi’s hilltop yoga pavilion is a serene way to begin each day

The Unmissable Experience:

Swimming with horses. You’ll be matched with your steed at the stables and take a dip in the calm ocean together. It’s a totally unique bonding moment and makes for the most gorgeous photos.

"This sculpture is called "Transmission" by artist Daniel Popper. Its a reminder that we are all rooted in love, unity and the divine. She stands a towering 28 feet tall and is located on Mojave Moon Ranch in Joshua Tree. The land is private property, so you can see it from the viewing platform off of Sunfair Road. And take it from me, it's best viewed at sunset."

Just 1 hour from Shanghai by train, Cherry Blossom Valley is a popular tourist destination, particularly in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The valley is named after the thousands of cherry blossom trees that cover the area and create a stunning display of pink and white flowers. The trees were originally planted in the 1980s by a group of Japanese experts who were invited to China to help with reforestation efforts. The best time to visit is typically in late March or early April. Get there early to beat the crowds!

For a magical moment and bucket list travel experience, visit the end point of the annual monarch butterfly migration. Starting in August, the monarchs travel 2,800 miles south from Canada, making a temporary home amid the towering trees of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, where the two most popular sanctuaries to view them are el Rosario in the state of Michoacan and Piedra Herrada in Estado de México.
