A Solo Traveler’s Whirlwind Guide to Jamaica

By Ciara Johnson (@hey_ciara)

Three days in Jamaica might not be enough to see it all, but it’s enough to fall in love. From Kingston’s vibrant street art to the adrenaline rush of Dunn’s River Falls to the chill vibes of Montego Bay, I’m here to say that the hype is real.

Soaking Up Art and History in Kingston

Landing in Kingston, the capital, felt like stepping into a vibrant cultural hub. I’ve heard that this is the real Jamaica, so I was excited to explore an area beyond the resort towns. I checked into the S Hotel Kingston (formerly known as the Spanish Court Hotel), and instantly, it was love. The Bob Marley–inspired decor was a beautiful touch. (Kingston is home to the Bob Marley Museum, housed in his former home and recording studio; it’s a must-visit for any fan!) But let’s talk about that rooftop dinner: Oxtail, live music, poolside, and a view? Yeah, that’s how you kick off a trip.

Kingston Creative’s Walking Tour in central Kingston blew my mind. Over 100 murals sprawled through several blocks, each one telling a story. Think Bob Marley, Usain Bolt, and many more cultural icons brought to life in vibrant colors. Not to mention augmented-reality pieces featuring different effects and animations. This isn’t your everyday street art; it’s an immersive experience. If you’re into street art or just want to understand the soul of Kingston, this tour is a must.

Splashing Through Waterfalls and Swinging from Ziplines in Ocho Rios

Most would never guess how mountainous Jamaica is, but I was able to see for myself as we journeyed from Kingston to Ocho Rios. We were en route to Dunn’s River Falls, which is the main event in Ocho Rios. Imagine crystal-clear water cascading down into the Caribbean Sea, and you’re climbing right up the middle of it. You’ll be wading through these falls and scaling up massive limestone rocks along the way. It’s a thrilling, slippery climb, but totally worth the adventure. Pro tip: Bring water shoes, sunscreen, and a fan. Trust me on this! In need of a greater adrenaline rush? Try the zipline! It’s a short but sweet ride with a bird’s-eye view of the falls.

After all that action, you’ll want to refuel with some local treats. Jump behind a line of locals at Juici Patties for some of the best Jamaican patties on the island. I ordered the chicken curry and beef patties, which were perfectly flaky and flavorful.

My home base for the night in Ocho Rios was the Jamaica Inn. Think colonial architecture, rooms that make you feel like royalty, and a private beach that looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. Even Marilyn Monroe and Meghan Markle have stayed here. I enjoyed a beachside dinner at Teddy’s Beach Bar, where the oxtail empanadas stole the show and the service proved to be on point. The staff will certainly make you feel “one love.”

Exploring and Relaxing in Montego Bay

En route to Montego Bay, we stopped at Scotchie’s for a taste of their famous jerk chicken. It’s a must-try! Jamaican cuisine is a whole trip in itself—from rice and peas to exotic fruits to curry goat, you’ll want to prioritize the local food at every turn of your trip.

As you reach Montego Bay, I recommend taking a detour to Martha Brae River for some bamboo rafting. Picture yourself gliding along calm waters on a bamboo raft, surrounded by lush greenery. It’s pure serenity.

As far as accommodation goes in Montego Bay, I highly recommend the Half Moon resort. This property is modern luxury at its finest. I pampered myself with a massage at the massive spa, and the beach views from my room were breathtaking.

I ended my trip with a night out in Montego Bay at Lounge 2727 and Pier 1, which my local guide said was a must-do since the island is known for its music and nightlife. I can finally say I’ve partied in Jamaica! I couldn’t think of a better way to end my three days in paradise.

Beyond the Itinerary

This trip wasn’t just about checking off boxes. It was about connecting with the heart and soul of Jamaica. The people of Jamaica, with their infectious smiles and laid-back attitude, are the true highlight. They make you feel welcome, help you slow down, and enjoy the “irie” lifestyle.

My biggest tip? Embrace the unexpected. Jamaica is full of surprises. Be open to detours, spontaneous conversations, and the magic of the island. Let the rhythm of the music guide you, and don’t be afraid to chat with locals or even get a little lost. This island is not only meant to be seen, but also felt.

Even on a short trip, I managed to pack in adventure, relaxation, delicious food, and unforgettable memories. Jamaica is waiting with open arms. Pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready for an island adventure you’ll never forget!

A Family Travel Expert’s Guide to Jamaica

By Emily Krause (@amomexplores)

Every parent knows the struggle of finding a vacation destination that each member of the family will enjoy. Jamaica is a destination that checks all the boxes, with striking landscapes, an array of resorts for every budget and travel style, and a lively culture.

Whether you have a family of foodies, nature lovers, music aficionados, adrenaline junkies, beach bums, or a mix of all of the above, there’s something in this Jamaica itinerary for everyone. Three days is only enough time to scratch the surface, but that’s just the excuse you need to plan a return trip to Jamaica!

Culture in Kingston

Though Kingston is often overlooked in favor of resort destinations like Montego Bay, I would recommend adding it to your itinerary to immerse yourself in Jamaica’s rich culture and heritage—and it is a great way to kick off your time on the island. The S Hotel Kingston will be your home away from home there. It’s the perfect oasis in the middle of the bustling city with a chic rooftop bar complete with an infinity pool that the kids will love! A buffet breakfast is included with your stay, so you can enjoy slow mornings before heading out into Kingston.

Given that I was a first-time visitor to Jamaica, my knowledge of Jamaica’s historical background was woefully lacking. Taking a walking tour with Kingston Creative through Kingston Art District was the perfect introduction, though. As I listened to our tour guide’s passionate descriptions of the murals, I began to understand Jamaica's national motto, “Out of Many One People.” The multicolored murals depict the wide variety of backgrounds of the Jamaican people, and our guide shared that despite their differences, Jamaicans share a spirit of unity.

It’s one thing to read about that in a book, and quite another to let your kids see the larger-than-life murals and soak in the message of community that is a cornerstone of Jamaican culture. Families can customize their tours with Kingston Creative to focus on art, food, or music. If you have Bob Marley fans in your family, you may want to request a visit to the place where Bob Marley once lived.

Adventure in Ocho Rios

There are so many opportunities to experience adventure and recreation on the island, but I would suggest starting with Dunn’s River Falls and Park, one of the top attractions in Jamaica. Climb a terraced waterfall with the help of friendly guides, who will lead you safely to the top. The falls are the crown jewels of the park, but you can also enjoy ziplining across the falls or relaxing on the beach at the foot of the waterfall where it flows into the sea. There’s even a splash pad the youngest members of your family can enjoy.

After all of that adventure, you’ll be ready to relax. There is no better place to rejuvenate than the iconic Jamaica Inn, a family-owned luxury five-star hotel that welcomes children ages 10 and over. It's a place where there is no pressure to do anything but relax on the pristine private beach with a rum punch in hand.

What struck me most about the Jamaica Inn was the genuine warmth of each and every staff member. I walked away from each interaction with the distinct sense that the staff was thrilled to be sharing their slice of paradise with me. Hospitality isn’t just a slogan at the Jamaica Inn, but a way of life. If secluded tranquility is what you’re seeking, I would highly recommend at least one night here!

Relaxation in Montego Bay

For the final leg of your trip, make your way to Montego Bay for that classic resort experience that many people associate with a vacation in Jamaica. Check into Half Moon resort and immediately let go of every care and responsibility. Take advantage of the Children’s Village, where kids can play under the watchful eye of highly trained staff while Mom and Dad enjoy a luxurious massage at the spa.

To spend some quality time together as a family, make use of the blue bicycles stashed around the property. They’re free and available to use at any time. Half Moon has a crescent-shaped beach where the water is shallow and clear, which is perfect for young swimmers to enjoy the ocean. At the beach, you can also kayak, paddleboard, snorkel, or even swim with horses. For peak family leisure, head to the family-friendly pool with a swim-up bar.

While you may want to venture off the resort to enjoy the local culture, there are also plenty of restaurants on the property if convenience and relaxation are your top priorities.

Jamaica is Waiting

As a mom of four who travels frequently with her kids, I’ve learned to plan the structure of a trip while leaving a lot of room for spontaneity. And that’s the perfect mindset for a Jamaican family vacation.

If you’re too focused on getting from point A to point B, you’ll miss out on the interactions with the Jamaican people that will set your trip apart from your average beach resort getaway. Their warmth and hospitality are refreshing when so many destinations these days are indifferent to visitors at best and hostile to them at worst. Their joy and gratitude for each day is infectious, and will truly change your outlook on life.

Jamaica will disarm you. It will delight you. And it will leave you wanting more. So book that Jamaican getaway with your family for some quality time, adventure, culture, and relaxation. And don’t worry about seeing it all at once, because I guarantee that after spending time there, you will be booking a trip back as soon as you get home.

A Luxury Travel Agent’s Perfect Jamaica Itinerary

By Nydia Romero (@loweluxurytravel)

Keep in mind that three days in Jamaica won’t let you see the whole country, but it’s more than enough to experience the essence of true Jamaica. Visit for the adventure, and you’ll be charmed by the warmth and exceptional hospitality of its people. From Kingston’s lively street art and the thrill of Dunn’s River Falls to the laid-back ambiance of Montego Bay, this country has it all.

Here’s a suggested itinerary to help you make the most of your three-day escape to Jamaica:

Kingston: Where History Meets Modern Culture

Kingston, Jamaica’s vibrant capital, offers a rich mix of cultural, historical, and musical experiences; it also offers a blend of historical depth, musical heritage, and urban vibrancy.

Touching down in Kingston, the capital, felt like stepping into a lively cultural epicenter. Eager to explore beyond the typical resort experience, I was thrilled to dive into the heart of Jamaica by staying at the S Hotel Kingston, a well-regarded luxury hotel known for its elegance and high-quality service. The Bob Marley–inspired decor added a unique flair, but it was the rooftop dinner at Jamrock that truly stole the show. Imagine savoring blackened seafood with live music playing by the poolside with a stunning city view—this is how you set the tone for an unforgettable trip.

The Art Walk Tour in Kingston provided by Kingston Creative was a true revelation. Wandering through the city, I was surrounded by more than 100 murals, each one bursting with color and personality. Icons like Bob Marley were immortalized in these vibrant artworks, but it didn’t stop there. Augmented-reality features added a whole new layer of interactivity, with animations and effects bringing the art to life in unexpected ways. This tour isn’t just a stroll through street art; it’s a deep dive into Kingston’s cultural heartbeat. If you’re interested in art or just want to connect with the city’s spirit, this experience with Kingston Creative is essential.

Ocho Rios: Where Adventure and Relaxation Intertwine

Ocho Rios is a vibrant and picturesque town on Jamaica’s north coast, famous for its natural beauty and exciting activities. Jamaica’s flora is truly mesmerizing, and you would never expect how some of these elements contribute to the activities in Jamaica, like ziplining over waterfalls. Dunn’s River Falls is one of the most iconic attractions in Jamaica, as this stunning waterfall cascades into the Caribbean Sea. Climbing the falls is a must-do experience, offering a thrilling and refreshing adventure. For an extra thrill, the zipline offers an incredible perspective of the falls and the lush surroundings.

Make sure you pack water shoes to avoid slipping on rocks, sunscreen (which is crucial under that tropical sun!), water, and some snacks to refuel after your adventure. If you forget to pack snacks, make sure you try a delicious meal or sweet treat from a local restaurant.

Next up was a stay at Jamaica Inn, which is a renowned luxury resort celebrated for its timeless elegance and exceptional service. (Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller celebrated their honeymoon at the Jamaica Inn, and Meghan Markle, aka the Duchess of Sussex, had her first wedding here.) The Jamaica Inn was an absolute paradise, to say the least. Staying in a place with such a rich history and stunning private beach is truly a heavenly experience. Teddy’s Beach Bar on the property was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of adventure, especially with the delicious oxtail I had for dinner.

The personal touch from the staff at the Jamaica Inn is always the cherry on top of a great experience. With a beachfront room, piña colada in hand, and sunset views, I contemplated never returning home. Yeah, it’s that magnificent.

Montego Bay: Where Luxury Meets Paradise

Montego Bay is a fantastic place to kick back and soak up the laid-back vibes of Jamaica. The beaches there are renowned for their beauty, and you can often find a spot to just relax and enjoy the scenery.

We were lucky enough to spend our last night in Jamaica at Half Moon, a resort renowned for its luxurious offerings and breathtaking setting. The resort’s colonial architecture, combined with its lush tropical gardens and two-mile stretch of pristine private beach, creates a picturesque atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting. Accommodations range from beautifully appointed rooms to stunning villas, each offering its own slice of paradise.

Half Moon is also known for its extensive range of amenities, including a world-class golf course, a spa offering a variety of treatments, and an array of dining options that cater to diverse tastes. Whether you’re interested in water sports, exploring the nearby attractions, or simply lounging by the pool, Half Moon provides a well-rounded experience. We had the privilege to experience a massage at the award-winning Fern Tree spa, and I did not want it to end. The spa team is incredibly professional and welcoming, and I cannot recommend treating yourself to a massage enough.

We finished our night at Lounge 2727, which is known for its relaxed and sophisticated vibe. It’s a great spot for unwinding after a day of exploring or just enjoying a leisurely evening. The lounge typically offers a stylish atmosphere with a mix of contemporary and tropical decor, creating an inviting space for guests to relax. The best treat of the night was stopping with street vendors at 2 a.m. and getting their pan chicken, which is essentially grilled chicken chopped into tiny bits and smothered in jerk sauce. I still dream of that chicken every day and would travel back to Jamaica just to stay up until 2 a.m. to find these vendors and buy out all their pan chicken.

Going Beyond the Travel Guide

Connecting with the local culture and people is absolutely what turns a good trip into an unforgettable one. In Jamaica, the local culture, with its vibrant music, flavorful food, and welcoming attitude, creates a unique atmosphere that’s more than just the sum of its tourist attractions. The warmth and friendliness of Jamaicans really do embody the island’s unofficial motto of “One Love.” It’s those genuine interactions—whether it’s sharing a laugh with a local vendor, enjoying a meal with new friends, or simply soaking up the laid-back vibe—that truly enrich the travel experience.

My best advice is to go with the flow. Jamaica has a way of surprising you. Be ready for impromptu adventures, serendipitous encounters, and the island’s unique magic. Allow the local music to set the pace, engage with the people around you, and don’t be afraid to explore off the main routes. Immerse yourself in the true essence of Jamaica, beyond just the sights.
