Opened in 1890 as the first western-style hotel in Japan, it was redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923, and then again 50 years later. Today, it’s every bit as glamorous as it’s always been—and is gearing up for its next chapter: a 10+ year-long reimagining (it will remain open throughout) in time for its 150th anniversary in 2040.
