This Parisian Experience Sets a New Standard for a Birthday Trip

Using a milestone birthday as an excuse to travel isn’t anything new, but over the past few years, it has become a trend in its own right. An early 2026 study by AAA reported that more than 75 percent of travelers are planning their trips around celebrations—and a full third of them are hitting the road (or skies) to celebrate a birthday.

It’s a trend that tracks with our collective shift toward seeking out experiences instead of things, as well as a desire to connect more deeply with those we love most. It’s also one that speaks to the growing impulse to use travel as the impetus for personal transformation—where birthdays spent exploring bucket-list destinations, experiencing new cultures, and stepping out of our day-to-day lives leave us changed for the better in ways traditional birthday presents never could.

That’s exactly what the new Paris Sweet Sixteen experience at Raffles Le Royal Monceau Paris offers. The package, designed with mothers and daughters in mind, is undeniably indulgent. But beyond the luxurious experiences (more on those in a minute), it’s a way for families to bond and for young women to step into a more adult chapter of their lives with confidence.

“From the second we walked in the door, everyone knew she had just turned 16 and wished her happy birthday over and over again,” recounts Jay Meyer, who, along with his wife, Missy, recently rang in his daughter Harper’s 16th birthday at the hotel. “At first, Harper didn’t quite know what to do with all of the attention,” he laughs, “but over the course of our stay, she became much more confident.”

That growth is by design. The package is centered on activities that blend classic Parisian experiences and indulgent moments—think crepe-making lessons guided by Le Royal Monceau’s executive pastry chef Alexandre Favre and mother-daughter spa treatments—with opportunities for the birthday girl to step out of her comfort zone.

A personal styling session at Le Printemps, for example, is more than a chance to pick up a few presents—it’s a way to usher in a new era. “The personal shopper was so adept at picking up on Harper’s personal style,” says Missy. “They pre-selected things they knew she would love but also things that were fun, new, and pushed her style boundaries just enough.”

The shopping trip, along with a professional makeover back in the birthday girl’s suite at Raffles, is all in preparation for the biggest moment of the birthday experience: a photoshoot with a celebrity photographer (in Harper’s case Pierre Perusseau) against Paris’s most iconic backdrops to mark the milestone.

In all, the package illustrates just why we travel to celebrate those we love most. “The best gift of this experience was that it allowed time to connect with Harper on an elevated level and to have fun, explore Paris, and hang out in a way that’s not possible at home when we’re in our normal routine,” explains Missy. “We made memories we’ll have for a lifetime.”

A joyeux anniversaire, indeed.

Would you go on a quietcation? One of this year’s biggest travel trends has us seeking out silence—like the kind you’ll find if you’re in Bali on March 19th for Nyepi. For 24 hours, the island goes quiet in celebration of the Hindu New Year, giving residents and guests space to cleanse negative energy, reflect, and welcome in new beginnings.

Sometimes, over-the-top trips look like five-star hotels and private jets. Other times, it looks more like this: taking in the stars while on a guided horseback trek across Mongolia’s wild steppes, deserts, and mountains with pelorusx. What’s more your speed?
