Beach Insider: Malibu

Beach Insider: Malibu

The Charm of the Open Coast

We are days away from the official start of summer — a season synonymous with longer days, lapping ocean waves and soft sand on bare feet. To celebrate, we’ve tapped local insiders for their favorite beach destinations, memorable stays and unforgettable eats across America. We’ll share new locales throughout the summer, but nothing seems more perfect to kick it off than the sunny, chic city of Malibu, California. Joelle Maynard, founder of beach-driven fashion and lifestyle brand Hamabla, walks us through the ultimate coastal getaway.

Best Beach

"Each beach in Malibu has its own unique charm, but the beaches at Leo Carrillo State Parkare fantastic and make for an incredible day by the ocean. The dramatic rock formations are absolutely stunning and unique to the area. The beaches themselves have expansive flat areas and are often much less crowded than others in Malibu. At low tide there are incredible tidepools, rocky areas and small caves that are fun to explore."

Eat, Drink, Repeat

"Malibu Farm at the Pier is the quintessential Malibu experience. There are actually two restaurants, one closer to PCH and the other all the way at the end of the pier overlooking the ocean. The food is farm-to-table heaven, with an organic menu of carefully selected local produce and sustainable seafood."

Retail Therapy

"Room at the Beach at the Malibu Country Mart is a hidden gem — a beautifully curated store founded by Elizabeth Lamont that's stocked with unique home goods, handmade gifts and ocean-inspired curiosities."

Overnighter

"Although I live just a mile away, my husband and I love to escape for a mini staycation at the Surfrider Hotel. It’s a recently renovated hotel in the heart of Malibu, right across from the Malibu Pier on PCH. It had a rich history as an iconic 1950s-era hotel, but now the vibe is California cool, minimalist chic with warm, modern touches. It’s the perfect size for a boutique hotel, with just 20 rooms, so it feels as if you’re at your very own beach house."

Some of our favorite historic properties—including the delcoronado in San Diego—are said to be haunted by the ghosts of guests past. In the case of the Del, the spirit of Kate Morgan, who checked into the iconic resort in 1892, is believed to have never left. (Though with some of the best beachfront access anywhere in California, we can’t say we blame her for wanting to stay at the property forever.) Tell us, would you stay at a haunted hotel?

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: biking is one of the best ways to explore destinations both new and familiar. 🚴🏽‍♀️ And viceroyhotels seems to agree. The hotel group has just launched a selection of curated routes out of its hotels in Santa Monica, Chicago, Washington D.C., and the Algarve, Portugal, with cycling brand Rapha. Designed for serious bikers and leisurely riders alike, each guided route is designed to get lost in the hidden corners of each destination and connect with local communities in a way you can’t on four wheels.

You’ve heard of Michelin Stars, but what about Michelin Keys? Earlier this month, Michelin awarded its second-ever group of Keys to outstanding hotels and resorts in over 100 countries across every continent (save Antarctica). Included on the list with a top three-Key designation is South Africa’s stunning royalmalewane — which debuted the new Masiya’s Camp, pictured here, earlier this year.

Check the link in our bio for the full list of newly keyed properties…and while you’re there, sign up for our newsletter: more bucket-list worthy hotel recommendations are coming your way later this week.
